Sting will star as shipyard foreman Jackie White and will perform the role at every performance. This musical was inspired by Sting’s 1991 album “The Soul Cages” and his own childhood experiences. It tells the story of a community amid the demise of the shipbuilding industry in Tyne and Wear, with the closure of the Swan Hunter shipyard. When a sailor named Gideon Fletcher returns home after seventeen years at sea, tensions between past and future flare in both his family and his town. The local shipyard, around which the community has always revolved, is closing and no one knows what will come next, only that a half–built ship towers over the terraces. With the engine fired and pistons in motion, picket lines are drawn as foreman Jackie White (Sting) and his wife Peggy fight to hold their community together in the face of the gathering storm. This personal, political, and passionate musical from multiple Grammy Award®–winner Sting is an epic account of a family, a community and a great act of defiance. THE LAST SHIP features an original score with music and lyrics by Sting as well as a few of his best–loved songs: “Island of Souls,” “All This Time,” and “When We Dance.” It is the proud story of when the last ship sails. We saw it on Broadway and it was good but not great and, thus, didn't last long there.)National Theater$54–$114

(In honor of Beethoven’s 250th birthday, Gianandrea Noseda leads the Orchestra in a three–week festival of concerts celebrating the composer’s remarkable genius and impact on music. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to hear all nine of his symphonies—music that resounds as loudly today as it did two centuries ago. All five programs will be recorded for future release. "There were three artists who changed the world. Of course, there are many, many other great ones, but these actually changed the world: Da Vinci, Dante, and of course, Beethoven.”—Gianandrea Noseda. The tribute to Beethoven begins with an exciting concert featuring Beethoven’s Third Symphony, “Eroica,” a major turning point in musical history. The work illustrates the composer’s own spiritual quest towards heroism as he coped with deafness and found new triumph in his art and life. Also on the program is Beethoven’s First Symphony and his Overture to The Creatures of Prometheus, a popular ballet inspired by another hero whose suffering ultimately helped mankind, the rebellious Greek Titan who stole fire from the Gods to give to mortals.)
